Undesigning Norms

In Sweden, only three out of the 30 most common professions are gender balanced. The technical field is dominated by men while only three percent of nursing staff are represented by men. Contributions, experiences and perspectives are lost as a result of the homogeny and not only in regards to gender in occupational groups.

The upper secondary school programs reflect the labour market. In the project, ways of how to widen teenagers’ views of professions are explored — undesigning norms. Through a participatory design process, a digital tool has been developed that offers support for young people who are in a stage of life where they explore vocational futures. Undesigning Norms rethinks traditional ways of categorising professions by breaking stereotypic thoughts and choices regarding future careers.

The process of creating the tool revealed how national authorities communicate representations of professions in ways that reinforce traditional ideas of who could do what. Through co-creative activities with authorities, the project is a trigger for change.

The aim with Undesigning Norms is not only to make the world more equal, but also to show how designers can be agents for societal change.

Undesigning Norms
