Industrial Design

“Design is the foundation of all human activity.” – Victor Papanek

In this year’s bachelor degree projects in Industrial Design, the students explore contexts and people, as well as the methods we use as designers. They meet with people in companies, in organisations, in the home, in the countryside and in the city. The students create prototypes and let people use them, providing them with new insights. They experiment with different possibilities, and reflect on the consequences of their creations. Based on what the students learn from this process, they present proposals for products and solutions.

The conditions for industrial designers have changed drastically over the last few years. Today, it is a given for design students to not only consider aspects such as function, ergonomics, production technology and aesthetics, but to also reflect on major social issues. How is the environment affected by what we produce? In what way can our proposed solutions benefit society? Is it possible to do things in completely new ways? How can we use design to make more people feel included in different contexts? Is the solution necessarily a physical product, or could it also be a service or virtual experience? In a time of great change, the industrial designer has an important role to play. It is about keeping an open and curious mind while investigating, collaborating and experimenting to create solutions for the time we live in and for the future.

This year, our students ask questions about ageing, consumption, norms, healthcare, ownership, depopulation of rural areas, the relationship between craft and design, the design process, transportation, material properties, people’s relationship to objects and to one another, and finally our need for fire. With energy and creativity, they visit factories in rural and urban areas, dairies in the north and south, hospitals, elderly people, other designers, cycle commuters, researchers and psychologists. We proudly present their conclusions at the Degree Exhibition. Welcome!

Industridesign
