Storytelling

Since the Storytelling Master’s programme started in 2007, we have had applicants from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and both North and South America after our 14 places. This widespread interest in the programme confirms what we already knew – visual communication, illustration, visual narratives, comics and graphic design are undergoing a period of expansion, which crosses national borders.

Students graduating now will be the final group to graduate from the Storytelling programme. We are incredibly proud of the programme and the fact that we have been given the opportunity to develop it further into the Visual Communication Master’s programme with a pronounced norm creative profile. Many of the students already have a norm critical approach and the programme gives them the skills to consider increasingly complex issues in practice.

Amongst the graduating students we can see examples of how societal issues are reflected in the gaze of the surrounding world and in ourselves – and how these are at the core of our existence.

Many of the students’ work raise the question how. How can our work contribute towards liberating us from the norms of the surrounding world? How can we present visualisations of places and time, other than those which we are currently being fed? How is growing nationalism made visible and invisible through visual communication? How can I talk to you about the most difficult things in life? How is it even possible to talk about something that we all know already, but cannot fathom; that we are destroying the earth; that the sun will die – that we all will die?

Regardless of the fact that darkness is palpable and present, all is not hopeless. Quite the opposite. Through their work, the students show that they believe in the possibilities of visual communication, that we can still change and move each other.

Storytelling
